Bank of China (Hong Kong) Presents: National Development and Achievements Series – Approaching Perfection: The Intersection of Sports and Science
The 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games are held in November and December 2025 respectively. The Hong Kong Science Museum organises this special exhibition to introduce the remarkable achievements of national sports, showcase how innovative technologies empower athletes to reach extraordinary heights, and encourage the public to develop a healthy and active lifestyle.
The exhibition features all events held in Hong Kong for 2025 National Games, exploring the mental journey of athletes and uncovering their sports secrets. In addition, there is sports science analysis to illustrate the scientific breakdown of various sports events and reveal the keys to success. Besides, the exhibition houses more than 20 interactive exhibits for you to explore and discover your potentials.
Section 1: National Games
This section presents the history of the National Games, the National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the National Special Olympic Games, as well as the remarkable achievements that have propelled the nation’s sports endeavours to world class standards. It also showcases the events Hong Kong will host for the 2025 National Games, along with the inspiring stories of several Hong Kong athletes.
National Games Unveiled - Presents background information on the National Games, the National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the National Special Olympic Games, and showcases China's development and achievements in sports.
Athletes in Pursuit - Showcases the stories of Hong Kong athletes across various disciplines, highlighting the dedication and hard work they have invested throughout their journey to becoming athletes.
Section 2: Essence of Strength and Power
This section highlights rugby, handball, and beach volleyball to illustrate the scientific principles of strength and explosiveness, exploring how scientific approaches can boost athletic fitness and performance.
Spin and Speed Pass - Try the dive pass commonly used in rugby, learn the physics behind spin and stability, and experience how adjusting your hand movement and force can produce the optimal spin effect.
Spike Height Experience - Explore the optimal spike heights for beach volleyball across different age groups and discover the jumping capabilities of beach volleyball athletes.
Section 3: Dynamics of Speed and Agility
The section uses track cycling and table tennis as examples to demonstrate the vital role of speed and agility in sports, and shows visitors how sports technology, tactical strategies, and training methods can help athletes achieve peak performance.
Pedal Power - Experience a simulated ride in the velodrome, see how athletes train and compete, and discover the venue's distinctive design.
Wind Tunnel Exploration - Adjust the helmet's angle inside the wind tunnel, observe how airflow moves over its surface, and learn techniques for reducing aerodynamic drag.
Quick Moves - Use your palm to track rapidly changing sensor signals and experience the techniques athletes use to train their reaction abilities.
Section 4: Mastery of Technique and Precision
Athletes' technique and precision are often decisive in competition results. This section explores the footwork and sword-wielding skills of fencing, the precise swing mechanics of golf, and the targeting fundamentals in bowling, illustrating how these abilities can determine victory or defeat.
Sword Dance - Wield a prop sword and engage in an attack-and-defence duel with a virtual opponent while learning the techniques of fencing.
Grace in Motion - Sports wheelchairs enable athletes to perform a wide range of dynamic movements, elegantly performing fluid para dance techniques.

Section 5: Marathon of Endurance and Stamina
This section examines the science behind endurance and nutrition, using triathlons as a case study. Nutrition Strategies - Choose a variety of foods and learn how their different nutrients influence body functions and improve athletic performance.
Real-time Monitoring System - Understand how scientists track athletes' physiological condition and performance in real time, monitoring a variety of metrics during exercise.
Section 6: Art of Teamwork and Strategy
This section uses basketball and boccia as examples to demonstrate the critical role of teamwork and tactical execution. It also introduces concepts from sports psychology and sports medicine, offering a comprehensive view of the scientific fields that help boost athletes' performance.
Basketball Defence - With the help of an AI system that tracks posture and footwork in real time, visitors can learn the defensive slide commonly used in basketball.
Psychological Profiling - Assess how your concentration, reaction time, and decision making abilities evolve as you tackle challenges that gradually increase in difficulty.
Section 7: Sports for Wellness
The exhibition features a range of fitness tests that help visitors gauge their physical condition, encouraging them to integrate exercise into everyday life to boost both physical and mental well being and pursue a more active, vibrant lifestyle.
Health Fitness - Use AI technology to verify that you are performing fitness movements correctly, such as high knees, sit-and-reach, and sit ups.
Decoding the Body - Analyse body composition to understand key metrics such as body fat percentage, muscle mass, water content, and basal metabolic rate.
