“From the Drawing Board to the Screen” Online Talk Series

Thanks to the efforts of behind-the-scene production staff, we can enjoy the lively characters, realistic scenes and touching stories in animation films. Through online platforms, Hong Kong elites working far away at Pixar Animation Studios in the United States will share interesting stories and tidbits about their work in animation, as well as how to blend science and art seamlessly in their creations.
Lecture Details

Date and Time:
4.9.2021 (Sat) 11:00am - 12:00nn
Speaker:
Mr. Patrick Lin (Director of Photography, Pixar Animation Studios)
Theme:
How Camera and Staging Tell Toy Story 4
In the virtual sets of animation, “camera” is unbound by physical limitations, allowing you to shoot from any angle or distance that create scenes out of our imagination. In this talk, the speaker will take an in-depth look into the camera and staging of Toy Story 4. Besides walking the audience through the production process of “filming” a digital animated feature, the aesthetic thought process of the film’s camera language and structure will also be detailed, showing how cinematography is used in support of story and to strengthen characters’ emotions.

Date and Time:
25.9.2021 (Sat) 11:00am - 12:00nn
Speaker:
Mr. Anthony Wong (Animator and Story Artist, Pixar Animation Studios)
Theme:
Physics and Maths in Animation Creation
When appreciating the lifelike characters in animation, have you ever thought that the smooth movements of the characters, even the bouncing of their hair, are all produced by sophisticated mathematical and physical calculations? The speaker will explain how mathematics and physics govern the movements and speed of objects in animation creation, in order to produce animation with realistic details and perfect scenes.

Date and Time:
16.10.2021 (Sat) 11:00am - 12:00nn
Speaker:
Ms. Maria Lee (Character Shading Artist, Pixar Animation Studios)
Theme:
The Aesthetics of Yin and Yang Play in Shading the Character Luca
Colour selection and use is an important part of aesthetics. In this talk, an artist involved in drawing the titular character from Luca will share her challenges in shading Luca, as well as explain how the shading, textures, shapes, specularity as well as duality and blending of the colour palettes with regards to characters in animation will affect their aesthetic appeal.

What is the relationship between science and animation?

The coming episode [Science Online Tour] will introduce the eight technical processes and the underlying scientific principles in the production of Pixar animations, and demonstrate how to create highly realistic scenes using the STEAM concepts. Would you like to relive some of the classic Pixar film characters and scenes? Stay tuned for our live tour!
