Smart reactive colour changing materials spontaneously react to different kinds of stimulation, including heat, UV, visible light, water, electric fields, and mechanical force. The intricate science behind their colour transformations unveils a world of chemistry. The Hong Kong Science Museum has invited experts from NAMI to organise education activities on colour changing materials, providing you with the opportunity to delve deeper into these materials and understand the science behind them.
Expert "TECH" Talk - Fun Facts of Colour Changing Materials
Colour changing materials have widespread applications across various areas. Some are ubiquitous in our daily lives and yet go unnoticed, while others enable cutting-edge technologies. Dr. Erik Kwok from NAMI will share with us the interesting facts of colour changing materials and lead us to discover the applications of these materials in our daily lives.
Time: 3:00pm – 3:30pm
Speaker: Dr. Eric Kwok (Senior Technical Manager, NAMI)
Capacity: 30 persons per session
*️You are welcome to join on the spot. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis.
Workshop on Photochromic Pigments
The properties of light reactive smart materials will be demonstrated as you experiment and create artwork using photochromic pigments. These pigments are normally colorless, but would instantly change to vivid colours when exposed to sunlight, UV light or even visible light. When the pigments are away from the light source, they will revert to their colourless state. Through this fun STEAM activity, kids can create their own colour changing artwork!
Time: 4:00pm – 5:00pm
Suitable for: Child aged 8 - 12, with an accompanying adult
Capacity: 12 parent-child pairs per session (FULL)
️*Pre-registration on a first come, first served basis
Valid admission ticket to the Special Exhibition is required for participation
