Earth Science Workshop

March           April           May           June

 March

Programme Title

Date

Time

Earth Shaking Science
Earthquakes is one of the most destructive natural disasters to pose significant threats to humans. How do earthquakes happen? How is the energy released by earthquakes transmitted? Through different hands-on experiments, this workshop allows audiences to understand how plate tectonics causes earthquakes and the ways to prepare for earthquakes.

04-03-2023 (Sat)
18-03-2023 (Sat)
2:30 - 3:00 pm
3:30 - 4:00 pm

Multiple Perspectives on Disaster Preparedness
Other than severe weather, Hong Kong has small chance of facing natural disasters, such as large earthquakes. But the chance may be increased when we stay abroad. In this workshop, the audience will know more about typhoon and earthquake, how to cope with them and the importance of disaster preparedness through interactive games. It will enhance their knowledge and skills on the scope of community resilience and reduce the impacts of disasters on everyone.

Jointly organised with Community Resilience Service, Hong Kong Red Cross

Nice to meet you, Mr Rock!

Although Hong Kong is a small place, it has abundant geological resources and different types of rocks, including igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. What do they look like? Where to find them? Are there any interesting stories behind them? Get the answers by joining this workshop and meeting Mr Rock!

Jointly organised with Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

08-03-2023 (Wed) 3:30 - 4:00 pm
4:30 - 5:00 pm

Magic Lava Lamp
The lava lamp looks magical with its coloured bubbles sinking and rising. It is a model of what actually happens in Earth's mantle, and demonstrates convection currents which are the driving force of plate movement. In this workshop, the audience can make their own lava lamp and learn about the concept of density while enjoying some fizzing good fun!

(Suitable for children aged 4-10 accompanied by a parent)

3:30 - 4:00 pm
Rock Detective
Although rock can't speak, it left some clues to us. With careful observation like a detective, we can use the relative ages of rocks to determine whether a rock layer in a sequence is older or younger than other layers. This workshop will introduce different methods to determine the relative ages of rocks. Audience can also try to pack up the rock and soil layers of a model according to its formation sequences.

Jointly organised with Civil Engineering and Development Department
