The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Eternal Life -
Exploring Ancient Egypt: Insights into the exhibition

Ancient mummies have been a source of public fascination and a focus of scientific enquiry for over 200 years. Early investigation involved their unwrapping but modern imaging techniques now enable curators and researchers to virtually explore their mummified remains without damaging or disturbing them.

Six mummies curated at the British Museum, including a temple singer, a child from the Roman era and a priest, are the focus of the exhibition. Using cutting-edge science and technology, the public will discover how these remarkable individuals lived and died. The health problems that they suffered from during life will also be discussed, alongside their age at death, the mummification processes used to preserve their bodies, their beliefs, various aspects of daily life and, on occasion, anomalies in the embalming.

Museum Secrets: Egyptian Museum
We search for the lost tomb of Ramesses the Great. Then, we recreate the last violent moments of an ancient king to discover if he was a brave or cowardly man. We discover how a poor Pharaoh amassed a hoard of gold to rival King Tut, and enter an underground animal necropolis to find out why ancient Egyptians mummified cats, baboons and falcons by the millions. Cryptic inscriptions discovered on a pyramid's capstone reveal the secret of the pyramid's spiritual power.

Animal Mummies: Egypt’s Dark Secret
Modern advances in imaging technology are allowing Dr Lidija McKnight and her team to create accurate 3D images of ancient Egyptian animal mummies. The biggest survey of its kind, this study aims to discover the truth about the strange role animals played in ancient Egyptian beliefs.
