SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest 2022


To foster the pursuit of science knowledge among secondary school students, to enhance their presentation and communication skills, and to nurture young scientists in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Education Bureau are jointly organising the SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest and the Young Scientists Study Tour in 2022.

Earth science is a multidisciplinary science and its purpose is to study the Earth, including the solid earth, the atmosphere, the oceans, the biosphere, and their interactions as well as impacts of human activities on Earth's natural environment. In order to promote student's interest and to broaden their knowledge of the subject and to complement the opening of Earth Science Gallery, we are organising the programme with the theme of "Earth Science".

SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest 2022

Talk cum Briefing Session
To enhance the understanding of teachers and students on the contest details and the theme – "Earth Science", Hong Kong Science Museum will conduct a briefing session during the application period. Details are as follows:
Date: 5.10.2021 (Tue)
Time: 4:30pm - 6:00pm
Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Science Museum and live streaming
Content: To explain the details of contest, and to enrich participants' knowledge on "Earth Science"
Speakers: Prof. CHAN Lung-sang, Museum Expert Adviser of Hong Kong Science Museum, and Assistant Curator, Hong Kong Science Museum

- Contestants must be full-time Hong Kong secondary school students aged 15 or above (as at 31.12.2021)
- Contestants shall enter the competition on a school basis
- Each school can nominate a maximum of 2 teams, and each team shall comprise 2-4 students
- Application form must be submitted by fax or by email
- Team members cannot be changed after the deadline of application

Results of Application
Teams admitted to the competition will be notified by email on 26.11.2021 (Fri).

- Awards include the Champion, 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up and three Merit Prizes. Trophies and certificates will be presented to all winning teams. Participation certificates will be presented to the remaining finalists.
- Students of the top three winning teams will be entitled to join the Young Scientists Study Tour 2022 for free to visit Science Museums and field trips to sites of geological value in Japan.
- The remaining finalists will compete for individual places to join the Young Scientists Study Tour 2022 through a group interview to be held on 12.5.2022 (Thu). Candidates will be assessed on the following criteria:
1. Initiative (25%);
2. Analytical Skills (25%);
3. Presentation Skills (25%);
4. Interpersonal Skills (25%).
- The champion, first runner-up and second runner-up will be arranged to conduct public performance of their winning demonstrations

Young Scientist Study Tour 2022
Tentatively, the Young Scientist Study Tour 2022 would be held from 25.7.2022 to 30.7.2022. Participants will travel to Japan to visit science museums and field trips to sites of geological value in the country. The tour will be free of charge for outstanding contestants of the SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest 2022. Depending on the pandemic situation, the Young Scientists Study Tour 2022 may be changed to local geological field studies.
