The United Nations General Assembly declared the period 2011-2020 as the "United Nations Decade on Biodiversity" in an effort to raise public awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation and to encourage every one of us to take action to abate current rates of biodiversity loss. To echo the Decade on Biodiversity, the Hong Kong Science Museum has opened a new permanent exhibition gallery on biodiversity.
Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems, and the ecological and evolutionary processes. Biodiversity is so important that it underpins ecosystem functions and provides a large number of natural goods and services to sustain all living beings on Earth, including humans. Through the staging of the Biodiversity Gallery, we hope to promote public appreciation of biodiversity and raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation and of making proper changes to our lifestyles as part of our efforts to avoid a massive loss of biodiversity.
