SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest and Young Scientists Study Tour 2018


Objective
To foster the pursuit of science knowledge among secondary school students, to enhance their presentation and communication skills, and to nurture young scientists in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Education Bureau are jointly organising the SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest and the Young Scientists Study Tour in 2018.

Life sciences examine all biological aspect of living organisms, from cells to plants, animals, and humans. The study of life sciences is vital to increase our understanding of ecosystems, human health and environmental issues. To elevate student’s interest and to broaden their knowledge in the latest research of this subject, we are organising the joint programmes with the theme of “Life Sciences”.

SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest 2018
Eligibility
  • Contestants must be full-time Hong Kong secondary school students aged 15 or above (as at 31.12.2017)
  • Contestants shall enter the competition on a school basis
  • Each school can nominate a maximum of 2 teams, and each team shall comprise 4 student members
  • Application form must be submitted by fax
  • No amendments to the nomination list will be allowed after the deadline of application

Briefing Session
Date and Time: 11.1.2018 (Thu) at 5:00 pm
Venue: Classroom, G/F, Hong Kong Science Museum
Students accompanied by teachers-in-charge are welcome

Results of Application
Admission results of the competition will be sent to teams by email in early Feb 2018

Details of preliminary
  • Each team must develop the contents of a science demonstration based on a selected topic in “life sciences”
  • Prepare a demonstration overview (in Chinese or English) and a 3-minute demonstration trailer
  • Overview and trailer must be submitted between 5.2.2018 and 28.2.2018 using the specified method
  • Demonstration overview shall include:
    a. Title of demonstration
    b. Aim
    c. Introduction
    d. Science concepts involved
    e. Overview of the demonstration process and a brief description of the props and experiments to be used (Pictures and photos may be used for illustration, but the quantity is limited to 10 numbers only)

  • The 3-minute trailer shall include:
    a. Aim
    b. Science concepts involved
    c. Conduct a smooth and attractive presentation to introduce the demonstration process, including the props and experiments to be used, and carry out highlight experiments (Pictures and photos may be used for illustration)

    Judging criteria:
    1. Scientific accuracy (30%);
    2. Creativity and attractiveness (25%);
    3. Use of props and experimental skills (25%);
    4. Presentation skills (20%).
     
    Submission method:
    1. Convert the demonstration overview to pdf format
    2. Upload the demonstration trailer to YouTube and mark down the YouTube URL
    3. Send the demonstration overview (pdf format) together with the YouTube URL of the trailer to: scipophkscm@gmail.com
    4. Please enter the subject of the email starting with the name of the school and follow by the title of the demonstration. For example, “Hong Kong Science Secondary School – Molecular Cuisine”
    5. The overview file should not exceed 5MB, otherwise it may be rejected
    6. Deadline for submission is before 12:00 midnight on 28.2.2018 (Wed). Late submission will not be accepted
     
    Results of preliminary:
    1. Adjudicators will assess the works of each team based on the set criteria. Ten teams with the highest score will enter the final
    2. Finalist confirmation will be sent by email on 19.3.2018


Details of final
Presentation skills workshop:
  • Date and Time: 21.3.2018 (Wed) at 5:00 pm
  • Venue: Laboratory, G/F, Hong Kong Science Museum
  • Participation is compulsory for finalists and aims to enhance their presentation skills
  • Workshop will teach presentation skills and explain regulations on final

Submission of reference materials:
  • Finalists must submit a detailed demonstration proposal (in Chinese and English) and a 10-minute demonstration video before 12:00 midnight on 13.4.2018 (Fri)
  • Demonstration proposal and video will be used by the adjudicators and museum staff for reference prior to adjudication and rehearsal arrangement respectively
  • Submit the demonstration proposal and video in the same way as that in preliminary
  • Demonstration proposal shall include:
    a. Title of demonstration
    b. Aim
    c. Introduction
    d. Science concepts involved
    e. Props/Instruments/Chemicals used in demonstration
    f. 10-minute demonstration content (Pictures and photos may be used for illustration, but the quantity is limited to 15 numbers only)

  • Prepare a 10-minute demonstration video
    a. Produce props and prepare experiments according to the demonstration proposal
    b. Rehearse the demonstration repeatedly until the team becomes well-versed with the contents
    c. Record a 10-minute video of the demonstration

Rehearsal:
  • All finalists must attend a 30-minute rehearsal session held in the lecture hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum
  • Rehearsal will be held on 19.4.2018 (Thu) afternoon and 21.4.2018 (Sat) morning
  • Finalists are required to book a rehearsal session before 12:00 midnight on 9.4.2018 (Mon)
  • Please refer to the notification of the organiser on the booking method
  • Confirmation of rehearsal session for each team will be sent out by email on 13.4.2018

Final:
  • Date: 29.4.2018 (Sun)
  • Venue: Lecture Hall, Hong Kong Science Museum
  • Each team is required to perform a 10-minute science demonstration to the audience and adjudicators
  • Students must make use of props or hands-on experiments to convey the messages of their demonstration
  • Judging Criteria:
    1. Scientific accuracy (30%);
    2. Creativity (20%);
    3. Use of props and experimental skills (20%);
    4. Presentation skills (15%);
    5. Teamwork (15%).
  • After each demonstration, adjudicators will ask questions related to their demonstration and assess the team’s performance
  • Results of the contest will be announced at the end of the contest and uploaded to the website of Hong Kong Science Museum afterwards

Prizes
  • Trophies and certificates will be presented to the Champion, 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up. There will also be three Merit Prizes
  • Students of the top three winning teams and their teachers-in-charge will be entitled to join the Young Scientists Study Tour 2018 for free to visit renowned science museums in London, and participate in workshops and outdoor field studies at life science research institutes in the UK
  • Individual finalists (other than the top three winning teams) will be selected to join the Young Scientists Study Tour 2018 through a group interview to be held on 5.5.2018 (Sat).  Candidates will be assessed on the following criteria:
    1. Initiative (25%);
    2. Analytical skills (25%);
    3. Presentation skills (25%);
    4. Interpersonal skills (25%).
  • Champion, first runner-up and second runner-up will be arranged to conduct public performance of their winning demonstrations

Young Scientist Study Tour 2018

Tentatively, the Young Scientist Study Tour 2018 would be held from 20.7.2018 to 26.7.2018. Participants will travel to the UK to visit London Natural History Museum, London Science Museum and Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, and participate in workshops and outdoor field studies at life science research institutes. The tour will be free of charge for outstanding contestants of the SciPOP Science Demonstration Contest 2018. After conclusion of the tour, participants will be arranged to present findings of their study trip in a seminar in Hong Kong.
